From 18 to 21 September 2008 was held in Genoa the International Congress dell'AOECS ( Association of European Coeliac Society ), the body that brings together all the associations with celiac disease in Europe.
Attended by all the world's leading experts of celiac disease and the news emerged from their relationships are really encouraging.
The merit of the pill to be taken before meals can be attributed to prof. Fasano , director of the Center for Celiac Research and the Mucosal Biology University ' of Maryland in Baltimore.
The drug is an inhibitor of zonulin , a protein that plays a key role in the permeability of the intestine and which is produced in excessive amounts by those with celiac disease.
According to the explanation given by Professor Fasano in very simple terms understandable to the general public " zonulin is a kind of key that opens the door between a cell and the other of the intestinal wall The intestine is covered with a single layer of cells form a formidable barrier against external attacks , but celiacs lose this feature just because they produce too much zonulin . And it is for this reason that the "invaders " such as gluten enter the body . From the "doors" opened by zonulin pass into the body of toxic fragments incompletely digested gluten that trigger the immune system response , which triggers the typical symptoms of the disease . "
The pill has the ability to temporarily close all the ports that have formed between a cell and the other , thus preventing the gluten from entering the intestine and to trigger the immune reaction .
Currently the testing phase carried out on 110 patients showed that the drug eliminates the symptoms associated with the consumption of gluten in 85 percent of cases , by the end of the year will be announced the results of the new trial extended to a number of 180 patients .
Another drug is being studied at Stanford University, in California in 2009 and will be tested on humans . It is a protease , an enzyme capable of degrading completely gluten, digesting the whole and therefore making it harmless to celiac subjects .
With regard to the new vaccine are even greater.
In the past, science was speaking only of the possibility of creating a vaccine that can prevent celiac disease in individuals genetically predisposed to develop it , so a vaccine directed at those who, despite being the carriers in the DNA of the genes DQ2 oDQ8 , were still not immune reactions against ' ingestion of gluten ( speech may be valid for the children of celiac disease ) .
At the Congress of Genoa , on the other hand , it was officially announced that it is to the study , the University of Melbourne in Australia, a vaccine to treat celiac disease in those already affected by the disease.
It would be vaccine capable of re-
Up to now the introduction of gluten in the small intestine of the subject triggers celiac an innate immune reaction . The intestine of celiac patients , in fact , having an altered permeability can not act as a barrier against the fragments of gluten ingested . These fragments are incorrectly classified as hazardous extraneous agents and to destroy. To this end, intestinal lymphocytes produce anti-
The vaccine , through a complex process , will be able to block this immune reaction re-
The testing phase of the vaccine will begin later this year on 12 celiac patients and volunteers will be coordinated by Robert Anderson of the Division of Autoimmunity ' Transplantation and the Hall Institute in Melbourne Parkville .
